Infant Acne

When we picture a baby, we tend to have a stereotyped image of a pink, glowing little face that is almost overwhelmingly cute. The last thing we think about is pimples. And yet, the reality is that infant acne occurs on the faces of many babies. Usually it starts between three and four weeks of age, but sometimes it can even be present in newborns.

It can be a little distressing for the parents to see little red bumps all over their precious baby's face, but the good news is that infant acne is temporary, and doesn't require any treatment. However, it can stick around for a little while, and may only disappear gradually. It's quite possible that infant acne may come and go spasmodically until the baby is six months old.

I remember very well when my daughter broke out in infant acne at the tender age of three months. Her previously cute and adorable face was dotted with little red bumps, and even a good collection of whiteheads. I found it quite distressing, and so asked my doctor to tell me more about infant acne.

The doctor was very patient and helpful, and explained a lot more about this skin condition. I hadn't realised that the baby still had hormones in her system, that had crossed over while I was carrying her, via the placenta. Infant acne is to a great extent visible evidence of the hormones still being active, but it also shows that the baby is in the process of working the hormones out of her system for good.

In many ways, the baby's skin is simply going through a cleansing process, as the baby's system cleanses itself of the unwanted hormones. Different babies respond in different ways (many of them you wouldn't even be aware of), and one way is infant acne. It's all part of a natural process in the baby's system, and there's really nothing we, as parents, can do to stop it. In fact, it's important to let the process continue to the end, otherwise the baby's system may struggle to remove all the excess hormones.

Unfortunately many parents think that infant acne is caused by dirty or oily skin, and so wash baby's face more frequently to get it clean. This is actually one of the worst things you can do, as frequent washing may well result in the skin becoming inflamed. So remember that it's hormones, not oil or dirt, that's the problem. Detergents, milk and spit-up can make acne worse, so although you don't want to overwash the baby, it's important to mop up any spills quickly. Use a mild detergent, and make sure baby's face is always uncovered. Even your baby's favorite blanket can aggravate infant acne, if it's been washed in a strong detergent and is constantly held against the face.

All of this can seem a little disheartening, particularly if you are keen on photographing your baby's gorgeously cute smile with your camera at every opportunity. If your baby gets infant acne, you can expect to have that beautiful smile surround by little red dots for up to six months. But it's not worth worrying about - who's going to look at the acne when your baby's smile will completely outshine it?

Tips For Buying Organic Baby Clothes

If you want to dress your baby in clothing made without pesticides and toxic fabric finishes, organic baby clothes are a smart choice. Certified organic cotton baby clothing is also free of flame retardants, heavy metals and petrochemicals and other toxins that could be harmful to a developing baby. Whether you are shopping for a new baby or making over your baby's wardrobe, here are some tips to help you navigate through the world of organic baby clothing.

With the growing popularity of organic baby clothes, you can find it almost anywhere you look. If you like to shop online there are plenty of boutiques that specialize in organic baby clothing. As you decide which brands you like, you can also buy directly from the manufacturer. While you may not save money shopping direct, you will be able to choose from more of your favorite brand's product offerings.

You can also buy from smaller online shop owners on websites such as Etsy or Ebay. However find a store owner with good ratings and credibility and inspect the product carefully once you receive it. Organic baby clothes are also available at many of the large chain retail stores such as Babies "R" Us and Pottery Barn.

There is no denying that organic baby clothing costs more than conventional clothing, but if you shop smart, you can dress your baby in organic cotton or other natural fibers for reasonable prices. Coupons, sales and comparison shopping are just a few methods. Furthermore, if you are easing your way into organic clothing, you can start with the pieces that will be closest to your baby's skin and worn most often. You can't go wrong with body suits, t-shirts and leggings. They can be worn alone or layered under other outfits. For this same reason you may want to go with solid colors that can be mixed and matched for variety.

One thing you don't have to compromise with organic baby clothing is style. You can find organic baby clothes in traditional nursery patterns or minimalist solids. Options range from brights to neutrals and from hippy-chic to classic. So have fun expressing you and your baby's personal style through organic clothing.

Wherever you shop and whatever your price point, be sure to read the labels and inspect the fabric. You don't want to be fooled by marketing buzz words like "all natural" or even "organic." An article of organic baby clothing will be labeled as 100% organic and not blended with synthetic fabrics.

Organic Clothing For Your Baby

The skin of a baby is much more sensitive and vulnerable to harmful environmental contaminants compared to an adult. Baby skin is up to five times thinner and less oily, thus, making it more porous. It also produces less melanin, which helps protect the toddler against sunburn. A baby's metabolism is also higher than an adult but the baby's weight is lower; thus, making the baby very susceptible to absorbing toxins and dirt. In addition, a baby sweats less efficiently than an adult, so it is more difficult for her to regulate body temperature.

Most of the clothes being sold commercially are made from materials that can be harmful to a baby's sensitive skin. Clothes made of polyester, acrylic, fleece, and nylon frequently cause skin irritation. These clothing materials are often derived directly or indirectly from petroleum or natural gas, making them dangerous to a baby's health because they tend to constantly emit gas. Benzene, ammonia, and ethylene glycol are also found in the finishes of such fabrics. And no matter how often you wash the clothes, there is no guarantee that these chemicals will be washed off. That is why most parents choose clothes made from cotton because they are lightweight and breathable.

However, clothes made of traditional cotton may also harm a baby's sensitive skin. Traditional cotton is grown with the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers, and herbicides. In fact, it has been reported that most used pesticides used on cotton have been labeled as known carcinogens by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Then, during the process of converting raw cotton into cloth, more chemicals are added. Chlorine bleaches, silicone-based softeners, dyes, and silicon waxes are also added to the finishing to create soft, odor resistant, and mothproof clothing. These chemicals can cause burning eyes, throat, and nose. They can also increase vulnerability to cancer; as well as, cause sleeping difficulties. Fortunately, usage of organic cotton has increased extensively.

Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers. It is grown through safer methods such as crop rotation and manual weeding. Organic clothing protects a baby from dusts, thus, preventing her from acquiring allergies and ailments such as asthma. This is because organic clothing does not contain harmful substances that are found in the traditional cotton clothing. Organic clothes are also soft, breathable, and delicate to the skin; plus they are stronger and more durable compared to traditionally-grown cotton clothing.

Natural Cotton - Benefits of Using Organic Cotton Instead of Non-Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is cotton from non-genetically modified plants, that was grown without use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers what can end up in the air, water, ground and food supply. Organic cotton production improve environmental biodiversity and promote balance of ecosystems. All cotton sold as organic in the USA must meet special requirements which are regulated by National Organic Program from USDA covering how the cotton is grown.

All organic cotton producers are required to meet standards of Organic Food Production Act of 1990, enforced by The State Organic Program.

The first organic cotton project started 1990 in Egypt. Today natural cotton is grown in over 22 countries. The leading countries in successful organic cotton production are:

1.India
2.Turkey
3.China
4.Syria
5.Tanzania
6.United States
7.Uganda
8.Peru
9.Egypt
10.Burkina Faso

Here are some facts about non-organic cotton (OTA):

oCotton covers 2.5% of the world's cultivated land
oConventional cotton uses approximately 25% of the word's insecticides
oNon-organic cotton uses more than 16% of the world's pesticides
oOver 2.03 billion pounds of synthetic fertilizers were applied to conventional cotton in 2000 (142 pounds/acre), making cotton the fourth most heavily fertilized crop behind corn, winter wheat, and soybeans.
oThe Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2000 in the United States as "possible," "likely," "probable," or "known" human carcinogens (acephate, dichloropropene, diuron, fluometuron, pendimethalin, tribufos, and trifluralin).
oThe consumer suffers from chemicals in garments since non-organic cotton textiles irritate consumers' skin, as they can also cause neurodermatitis (chemical residues stay verifiable even in the ready-made garment).
oChemicals used in the cotton processing contaminate the environment and decrease it's biodiversity.

What products are made using organic cotton:

Personal care items (cotton puffs, feminine hygiene products, sanitary products, ear swabs, make-up removal pads)
Home furnishings (sheets, bedding, blankets, pillows, towels, bathrobes, tableclothes, napkins)
Clothes (men's, women's and children's clothing in a wide variety of styles)
Children's products (toys, diapers)
Stationery
Note cards

Don't forget about natural cotton seed which is used to feed animals. Oil which is derived from organic cotton seed is used in different foods such as chips, cakes and etc.

Where is no doubt that organic cotton growing practices are beneficial for both people and planet.
Some of benefits include:

Elimination of the pesticides and other toxic chemicals used in cotton
Reduced risk of people getting dangerous carcinogens from the cotton
Protection and conservation of environment
Increasing of biodiversity
Organically grown crops also yield soils with higher organic matter content, thicker topsoil depth, higher polysaccharides content, and lower modulus of rupture, therefore reducing considerably soil erosion

How fast is the organic fiber market growing? (OTA)

In 2006, organic fiber linens and clothing sales in the United States grew by 26 percent over the previous year, to reach $203 million, according to the Organic Trade Association's 2007 Manufacturer Survey. According to the 2006 edition of this survey, women's clothing accounted for 36 percent of total organic fiber consumer sales in 2005, amounting to $57 million in sales. Men's and child/teen clothing grew 56 and 52 percent, respectively, in 2005, while infant's clothing/cloth diapers grew 40 percent and accounted for $40 million in sales.

Make Yours An Organic And Eco Baby

The author looks at things that can make all the difference to an eco baby and eco family.

Organic and Fairtrade Baby Food

Organic baby food has been around for decades and fairtrade baby food has only recently been launched. Why feed your baby with chemicals, additives and possibly genetically modified ingredients when you can feed them fresh, organic and healthier food? By buying fairtrade it also enables you to put something back into local communities where the ingredients originated from, so that they can look after their families better due to being paid a fair price for their food and hence they are able to reinvest the funds into their community and families.

Organic and Eco Friendly Baby Care

Babies have extremely sensitive skin that requires a mild and gentle touch - which is why it makes sense to treat them with products made from the purest ingredients. The skin is the largest part of the babies body and is often prone to sores and nappy rash in the early days. Minimise the amount of chemicals coming into contact with the babies skin by buying organic or natural baby care products.

Organic and Fairtrade Baby Clothing

A babys skin is thinner than that of an adult, so make sure the clothes against their bodies are free from harmful pesticides and chemicals by buying clothing which are made from organic or hemp fibres which are made with the minimum or no chemicals in the production and processing. By buying Fairtrade or ethical baby clothes from companies such as HUG ensures that other babies in developing countries may benefit as well from the clothes that you buy. Cheap, brand new clothes from supermarkets etc. are often made in China in low cost production facilities where workers are paid the minimum wage and where the term sweatshops originated from. Buying second hand or using donated clothes is the ultimate form of recycling and is cheaper too at this expensive time of life.

Environmentally Friendly Cloth Nappies

Cloth nappies can be washed and reused hundreds of times. Millions of disposable nappies are used throughout your country and you can imagine what size of landfill is needed to bury them all! Cloth nappies can reduce nappy rash and have no suspect chemicals. By washing them with your normal clothes, you again minimise your babies impact on the environment.

Breast feeding

Breast milk is very economical, constantly available at the right temperature and if your diet is organic then so is your milk which is therefore better for your baby. If you have to buy formula we wary of buying Nestle as an International Nestle Boycott is in effect in 20 countries. The boycott will continue until Nestle ends its irresponsible marketing of breast milk substitutes world-wide and abides by the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and subsequent Resolutions in policy and practice.

Looking for more information on baby milk action or organic things for babies then see GuideMeGreen.com.

Organic Baby Diapers and Organic Baby Products

There are varieties in organic baby diapers.

1) Pre folded Organic Cloth Diapers

2) Fitted Organic Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers have been considered extremely tiresome to use as well as exasperating to clean or wash. Gone are the days of these misconceptions! Organic cloth diapers of today are better for baby's skin care compared to disposable diapers. Cloth diapers nowadays also come in varied types and designs to accommodate the various needs of parents and their preferences.

Pre-folded Organic Cloth Diapers

These are like olden type in which pins have to be used to fit each end. But they are the cheapest kind of diapers. They are usually in square shape and there will be an instruction manual to show how to use the diapers.

Fitted Organic Cloth Diapers

These types of organic cloth diapers are the most common cotton diapers and they are also quite convenient and can be compared to disposables. They usually come in sizes that range from preemies to larger sizes. They often have snaps, Velcro or any other type of attachment that can be used. They are cut and sewn to fit the bottom of babies and around the legs as well.

Advantages

Organic cloth diapers are now as convenient to use as disposable diapers. The cleaning and washing of the cloth diapers may present itself as a larger work load but the help that you give the environment by not disposing of plastic diapers is a good enough reason that can outweigh the extra work of cleaning the cloth diapers.

Organic cloth diapers are also more breathable than the disposable ones therefore promoting better air circulation and less chances of any skin condition of developing. Although, organic cloth diapers are quite absorbent, once baby wets them, they will usually need changing, which is a good thing because the urine and feces will not stay in contact with baby's skin for more than necessary.

Organic Baby Products

As babies are sensitive and they need lot of care for their immune system development a number of organic products are being introduced into the market.

Organic Baby Clothing

Many organic baby products are clothing and other fabrics such as bibs, diapers etc. The cotton used for organic baby clothing is grown, harvested and processed in such a ways that fits the organic requirements. These organic baby products are quite necessary since clothing is worn everyday and is in contact with your skin.

Organic Baby Skin Care

Organic baby products for baby's skin care are also necessary especially for infants. There are many skin care products that are made organically such as soaps, shampoos, lotions, sponges etc. These organic baby products come in many varieties and are usually fragrance free and also color free. If there are some with fragrance, the fragrance should state that it comes from essential oils and not from chemical based fragrances. Color or dyes used to color organic baby products must also be from botanicals and must not contain any toxic elements.

Organic Bedding

There is also organic bedding that babies can benefit from. In fact, using organic baby products such as beddings is a great idea because babies spend a lot of their time in their cribs. These organic baby products must also be free from allergens and must have not passed through chemical bleaching to be safe for babies to use. Even the cribs and play pens can be from organic materials (naturally bleached wood) and painted or coated with non-toxic paint and varnish.

So use organic and keep your baby and our world healthier and greener!

Protect Our Little Ones

Today as I was sitting watching my son play and surprisingly something that is so obvious struck me. We all know that all babies go through a period were it seems like every single thing they touch goes straight to the mouth. Without question like it's a primal instinct to do so and that is totally normal during this magical discovery process. However, more than likely what they are sucking on is not safe for them.

We all know of the obvious items such as toys, pacifiers, clothing, etc. Yes we all know and are aware that our children will no doubt put these in their mouth. However, most often families are totally unaware if little Johnny's toy is even safe. Most will assume the toy is safe since it came from a National department store and was a Major baby brand. If you take the time to actually look where the product was manufactured, you would mostly likely see Made in China. You would not believe the chemicals that have been found in toys from China. Chemicals such as lead, Chlorine, arsenic, bromine, mercury, and most recently cadmium. In 2007 Mattel alone recalled 21 million Chinese made toys in a two month period due to toxic chemicals in their toys.

The materials used in toys like plastics, paints, and fabrics are made up of chemicals, and may also contain added chemicals to impart specific properties such as rigidity, durability, flexibility or flame resistance. When children put these products into their mouths, some of these chemicals may enter their bodies. Some of the substances, which are not always chemically bound to the products, may also be released directly onto skin, or into the air that children breathe.

Because children's bodies are growing and developing, they are more vulnerable to the effects of toxic chemicals. Even small amounts of a chemical can impact a child's ability to reach his or her full potential. Children are exposed to toxic chemicals from many sources in addition to toys, and the combination of these many exposures may cause harm.

It's just not the toys that we need to be concerned with as well. It seems my son is always sucking on either his clothes, my clothes, or his wipe cloth. Almost all non-organic cotton clothing will have chlorine and formaldehyde in the fabric. If it says made in China on your label its almost guaranteed to be in there. They put these chemicals in their clothing to keep the fabric stain free and disinfected. Which might be a valid reason, but the problem is that formaldehyde is a carcinogen and is proven to cause cancer.

All of this can be avoided when you take the time, do some research, and buy Certified Organic Products, such as GOTS. You can purchase toys, clothing, bedding, food, pretty much anything is available organic these days. Does buying Organic cost more? Yes, but there are many reasons why. When it comes to cotton, Organic cotton produces smaller yields, thus costing more to produce. The advantage is Organic clothes are produced in ways that do not destroy the environment because they don't use pesticides and fertilizers. Which hurts the land and water supply, but that is a whole other subject. Here is a good example, the average large T-shirt from regular cotton requires 1/3 of a pound of pesticides to produce.

I am hoping that we all take a little more time to protect our little ones because they can't protect themselves. We look forward to bringing you some more FYI's this year.
