Make Yours An Organic And Eco Baby

The author looks at things that can make all the difference to an eco baby and eco family.

Organic and Fairtrade Baby Food

Organic baby food has been around for decades and fairtrade baby food has only recently been launched. Why feed your baby with chemicals, additives and possibly genetically modified ingredients when you can feed them fresh, organic and healthier food? By buying fairtrade it also enables you to put something back into local communities where the ingredients originated from, so that they can look after their families better due to being paid a fair price for their food and hence they are able to reinvest the funds into their community and families.

Organic and Eco Friendly Baby Care

Babies have extremely sensitive skin that requires a mild and gentle touch - which is why it makes sense to treat them with products made from the purest ingredients. The skin is the largest part of the babies body and is often prone to sores and nappy rash in the early days. Minimise the amount of chemicals coming into contact with the babies skin by buying organic or natural baby care products.

Organic and Fairtrade Baby Clothing

A babys skin is thinner than that of an adult, so make sure the clothes against their bodies are free from harmful pesticides and chemicals by buying clothing which are made from organic or hemp fibres which are made with the minimum or no chemicals in the production and processing. By buying Fairtrade or ethical baby clothes from companies such as HUG ensures that other babies in developing countries may benefit as well from the clothes that you buy. Cheap, brand new clothes from supermarkets etc. are often made in China in low cost production facilities where workers are paid the minimum wage and where the term sweatshops originated from. Buying second hand or using donated clothes is the ultimate form of recycling and is cheaper too at this expensive time of life.

Environmentally Friendly Cloth Nappies

Cloth nappies can be washed and reused hundreds of times. Millions of disposable nappies are used throughout your country and you can imagine what size of landfill is needed to bury them all! Cloth nappies can reduce nappy rash and have no suspect chemicals. By washing them with your normal clothes, you again minimise your babies impact on the environment.

Breast feeding

Breast milk is very economical, constantly available at the right temperature and if your diet is organic then so is your milk which is therefore better for your baby. If you have to buy formula we wary of buying Nestle as an International Nestle Boycott is in effect in 20 countries. The boycott will continue until Nestle ends its irresponsible marketing of breast milk substitutes world-wide and abides by the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes and subsequent Resolutions in policy and practice.

Why Choose Organic Cotton Over Conventional?

You have probably heard a lot about the benefits of 'growing green' particularly as an expectant parent, which makes sense for eating organic fruits and vegetables and grains that are grown with no GMOs and of course, using organic cleaners in your home. Now with some many products available on line, 'growing green' is even getting easier with the luxury of home delivery.

The 'organic' awareness is growing worldwide; with today more and more on-line buyers look for 'organic choices' mainly for heath reasons, but it does not just stop at food and home products.

When it comes to organic fabrics, organic cotton is becoming one of the most popular. In the US alone, acreage has increased by 9% in 2008 alone replenishing and maintaining our soil fertility through the reduction of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizer on the land. Statistics reveal that the ratio of farmland used to grow cotton and the amount of harmful chemicals put into the crops is vastly reducing.

Convention Cotton is one of the most pesticide-laden crops in the world after coffee, which represents 2.4% of all cultivated land, but utilizes 25% of the planet's pesticides and 10% herbicide spraying. Approximately 1/3 of chemicals are used to grown cotton for just one adult t-shirt.

In a recent study in 2009, "US Families Organic Attitudes & Beliefs Study, more parents are choosing to buy organic products over conventional supermarket and mass merchandisers. Even with the tightening of the current economic uncertainty, the most significant spending changes parents are making relate to the foods they eat" and now even more the clothes we wear.

The main reason parents are now opting to buy organic clothing and products has been over the concern for the environment and their health. An adult's skin is not as dense and is porous and quite capable of absorbing substances it meets, meaning some of these unnatural chemicals have been know to cause cancer. More frightening is we know a baby's skin is much more delicate and can absorb up to 15x more substances than that of adult. This is especially a worry for infants, as their skin is thinner and even more permeable than that of adults.

Conventional cotton is loaded with toxins; with this, chances are higher of toxins being absorbed into their little bodies, causing possible detrimental issues to the healthy development of their internal organs.

The difference is organic cotton is pure and grown using methods and material that have a low impact on the environment and grown without the use of pesticides, toxins and synthetic fibers. Our federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered deed for organic farming so all cotton sold as organic in the US must meet strict federal regulations overran how cotton is grown So when you are buying organic cotton products made in the US you are ensure of their value.

Not only is organic cotton better against our skin, we can also support our farmers who are continually improving our land quality for our family's future. More clothing companies are developing programs that either use 100 percent organically grown cotton, and with some expanding the use of international and domestic organic cotton, as we see the market increase in interest.

Therefore, the next time you go shopping, be on the lookout for organic products. There are a large variety of online shops too that can offer you a great-looking, natural organic products for yourself or a maybe cute, organic baby bodysuit and blankets for your little one. You will feel great about wearing it, knowing you made the right choice for your family and the environment.

Organic Clothing For Your Baby

The skin of a baby is much more sensitive and vulnerable to harmful environmental contaminants compared to an adult. Baby skin is up to five times thinner and less oily, thus, making it more porous. It also produces less melanin, which helps protect the toddler against sunburn. A baby's metabolism is also higher than an adult but the baby's weight is lower; thus, making the baby very susceptible to absorbing toxins and dirt. In addition, a baby sweats less efficiently than an adult, so it is more difficult for her to regulate body temperature.

Most of the clothes being sold commercially are made from materials that can be harmful to a baby's sensitive skin. Clothes made of polyester, acrylic, fleece, and nylon frequently cause skin irritation. These clothing materials are often derived directly or indirectly from petroleum or natural gas, making them dangerous to a baby's health because they tend to constantly emit gas. Benzene, ammonia, and ethylene glycol are also found in the finishes of such fabrics. And no matter how often you wash the clothes, there is no guarantee that these chemicals will be washed off. That is why most parents choose clothes made from cotton because they are lightweight and breathable.

However, clothes made of traditional cotton may also harm a baby's sensitive skin. Traditional cotton is grown with the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers, and herbicides. In fact, it has been reported that most used pesticides used on cotton have been labeled as known carcinogens by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Then, during the process of converting raw cotton into cloth, more chemicals are added. Chlorine bleaches, silicone-based softeners, dyes, and silicon waxes are also added to the finishing to create soft, odor resistant, and mothproof clothing. These chemicals can cause burning eyes, throat, and nose. They can also increase vulnerability to cancer; as well as, cause sleeping difficulties. Fortunately, usage of organic cotton has increased extensively.

Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers. It is grown through safer methods such as crop rotation and manual weeding. Organic clothing protects a baby from dusts, thus, preventing her from acquiring allergies and ailments such as asthma. This is because organic clothing does not contain harmful substances that are found in the traditional cotton clothing. Organic clothes are also soft, breathable, and delicate to the skin; plus they are stronger and more durable compared to traditionally-grown cotton clothing.

Best Organic Baby Clothes

As the demand for earth friendly organic clothing increases, exciting new options are emerging that promote health, style and a cleaner planet. Parents are increasingly looking to organic clothing as these garments are much softer on sensitive skin. In fact some natural fibers like bamboo have been reported to have antimicrobial properties.

Here are five great companies creating stylish and sustainable organic baby clothing:

1) Boo Bear Buns

Boo Bear Buns was created in 2006 by work-at-home-mom and activist Aimee Grimmel. Boo Bear Buns clothing line consists of cloth diapers, patchwork diapers, designer baby carriers They utilize organic and biodegradable materials, vegan and animal-free fibers as well as hemp materials. The company also recycles cardboard and tissue paper in their packaging. Their facilities are powered completely by solar, wind and other renewable energy sources and they are committed to using recycled office supplies and packaging materials.

2) Baby Greens Organic Clothing

All Baby Greens products are hand-printed with water-based inks on 100% Organic Cotton. They didn't just stop at the sustainable material...each bold & bright design is inspired by cultural representations of nature, further connecting people with the environment. The shirts are more in the vein of artistic multiples than production runs. The charm of Baby Greens comes from light variances in the artwork and hand printing process.

3) Baby Bambu

Launched in Aug. 07, Baby Bambu offers an environmentally friendly choice in baby clothing utilizing Bamboo Fiber. Bamboo fibre is an exceptional fabric; silky and softer than pima cotton, and it is said to be naturally hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, and provides UV protection. Infant Eczema - 7 Breastfeeding Principles

Breastfeeding can help your baby avoid contracting eczema. The longer you can breastfeed him the better. This article will talk about 7 breastfeeding principles and how it applies to eczema.

Intestinal protection from allergies

When children are born some assembly is still required, the mothers job of providing nutrients are still not yet complete. A young baby receives from the mother enzymes that prohibits allergens from passing into his bloodstream.

First foods increased chance of eczema

In the place of breast milk, infants are usually fed cow's milk. Cow's milk is known to contain more than a dozen allergy producing poisons. In fact cow's milk is made up of up to 20 different ingredients that can cause eczema and other allergies.

Immune system not developed to work on its own until 3 months

Your babies' immune system is for the most part unresponsive when he is very young up until the time he 9 months to a year old. That is the reason they are so susceptible to sicknesses unless they are well taken care of. Breast milk is the agent that is designed to bring the immune system up full functioning ability, and without it, the immune system never reaches its full potential.

Mothers milk provides antibodies

Not only does mothers milk prevent allergens from passing into the blood stream, it also contains antibodies that work against organisms that intend to hurt her child.

If you already have eczema, the flare ups are not as bad

When a child is being breastfed but develops eczema anyway breastfeeding is with good reason believed to make the condition less damaging than if he was not breastfed. If you are breastfeeding and your baby still gets eczema, you must then continue to breast feed. It is better to continue than to stop.

Signs of it leaving around age 2

People who continue to breastfeed their baby in the face of eczema are finding that by the time their child is about 2 years old, the eczema has shown signs of being reduced. At this time only the hands, feet and face are being affected. These are the last places that eczema affects a person before it goes away for good.

Breast fed through 12 months have a 46% less chance of getting it

Children who have no eczema and are breastfed through their first year of life are discovered in a study among 17,000 people to have had a 46% less chance of getting eczema than those in the study who were not breastfed.
